Tips on Using Streaming Video on Blogs

One may have noticed that recently it became very popular for both individuals and business companies to post streaming videos on their blogs or online journals. Most people that are going to be using a computer are fairly literate, but in some cases the individuals are not. When they come to a blog, they can get some of the information from the video and still be able to have a more dependable grasp on the concept, as opposed to not being able to view the video or read the blog. Secondly, many people do not have time during their busy day to commit to reading. It is not very easy to read something, and perform other actions at the same time.

Here are some tips on how to use videos on your blog for a commercial purpose:

1. Always offer a choice

Always give your visitors a chance to consciously decide whether to click a link to view the video or not. Video streamed automatically as long as visitors land on the page can be jarring and result in site avoidance.

2. Keep it low

For the most part, your visitors will be viewing your media streams from their office desktops, so audio needs to be clear but unobtrusive. This means you should avoid including large spontaneous crashes, beeps, sirens, etc. Make sure the volume controls are obvious and easy to use.

3. Make it short

Web attention spans - especially when it comes to video - are even shorter than those for television viewing. If you really want to get your message across, keep it as short as possible.

4. Make it navigable

When you need to run a long piece of video, simply break it into manageable pieces and let the user navigate among them. This is another way to put the user in the driver's seat and ensure that the video is well-received.

5. Make sure it's necessary

Many people are tempted to run video just because they can, and that's not a good reason. Video should add to your message or present it in new, compelling ways. A talking head spouting a marketing statement is not an example of compelling video content.
